Drive to Crescent City CA via Hwy 1/101 – 14 May

Today was quite a long drive but after checking out of our hotel in San Francisco, we decided we couldn’t leave until we had driven down Lombard street. You know the one, the crooked street that is world famous. We found it quite easily however when we got there, it was full of Japanese tourists taking photos. I mean they were literally everywhere, even standing on the road itself. it was like a tour bus full of them exploded. We had to stop on the drive down if we didn’t want to run them over, and boy that was tempting. They were even standing in people’s front yards. I would hate to live in this street.

You really cannot see how winding this street really is from the top, or the bottom, as the foliage has now grown so high.

I can now tick this off the bucket list.

We then proceeded to head north via Hwy 101 and over the Golden Gate Bridge. Another bucket list item completed.

The view along the way today was spectacular however the windy road made me very nervous. The speed limit was 55mph however the only person who could drive it at that speed would be a formula 1 driver with a death wish. They have no barricades like we have in Australia and the signs are not really indicative of how tight the curves are. I was glad when it was over in that respect. Below are some of the sights we saw today.

We drove through Fort Bragg and turned off to visit Glass Beach which is made up of tumbled glass from an old tip site. Many of the large pieces of glass are now gone but it is still pretty.

Unexpectedly, there were lots of ground squirrels who were very happy to have their pictures taken. These squirrels have burrowed into the sand walls to make their homes. Haven’t seen anything like it in the US before.

We drove through this little town called Green Valley. They had a motel there that reminded me of the movie Vacancy (for those who know it). We drove past, looked at each other and said ‘no thanks’. This is the problem when you have seen too many horror movies. I wonder if you had to sell your soul to stay for the night 🤔

Interestingly, we did happen to see Big Foot along the way heading out for some lunch. There are so many places out this way that promote Big Foot sightings, we had to get in on it too and purchase the postcard 😁

We ventured off our route to the Chandelier Tree in Leggett CA. This tree is so large you can drive your car through it. We paid $10 for the privilege but it was one of those things we could never do in Australia. The redwood trees here are huge.

Tomorrow we cross the border into Oregon, staying at Newport for the night.
